GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT AL-ANON
What is Al-Anon?
The Al-Anon Family Groups are a fellowship of relatives and friends of alcoholics who share their experience, strength, and hope in order to solve their common problems. We believe alcoholism is a family illness and that changed attitudes can aid recovery. Al-Anon is not allied with any sect, denomination, political entity, organization, or institution; does not engage in any controversy; neither endorses nor opposes any cause. There are no dues for membership. Al-Anon is self-supporting through its own voluntary contributions. Presently, there are more than 26,500 officially registered Al-Anon groups in 115 countries. Plus, there are more than 3,000 Alateen groups for young people from 10 to 18 affected by a problem drinker. |
How Do I Learn More About Al-Anon?
Most members find that attendance at an Al-Anon meeting is the best way to get a sense of whether the program and its principles can help in dealing with the issue of problem drinking. If you are just thinking about how we may be able to help, go to the page on this website called NEW TO AL-ANON? Another way to learn about the program is by visiting the website of the Al-Anon Family Group's World Headquarters (www.alanon.org). There is a wealth of information one can find within that official site. Please see other pages of this website for both local and general Al-Anon information! |
What If My Loved One Suffers from an Addiction Other than Alcoholism?
While the Al-Anon/Alateen World Service Organization (WSO) has not formally expanded the definition of our primary purpose -- to help friends and family of alcoholics-- many people attend Al-Anon and become members based on the principles and tools of the program that prove dramatically helpful in dealing with other forms of substance abuse and/or compulsive behaviors. This is especially true in smaller communities where a variety of Twelve Step programs such as NarAnon (friends/family of narcotic addicts) or CoAnon (friends/family of cocaine abusers) are not available.
We welcome anyone that seeks to address and over-come the challenges and negative impact of being (or have been) in any type of relationship with an alcoholic or a substance abuser.
